Dr Dolittle’s mythical Pushmi-Pullyu ring a bell, anyone? If you’re catching the vibe, you’ll understand the allusion to being pulled in two directions at once, and you’ll especially understand the sizzling new blues/glam-rock single “Push And Pull” by Auckland-based act Mini Simmons, out today. With a groove that’ll have you tapping a foot and nodding your head in blissed-out satisfaction (let’s be honest, add a martini and the scene would be set), the track is an ode to the paralysing sensation of being stuck at a crossroads, or, as the band phrase it, of “being stuck in a sticky situation and the peculiar struggle of clawing your way out.”
Reminiscent of the likes of T.Rex, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones, the track was recorded and mixed at the home studio of guitarist Brad Craig, adding a special (masterful) DIY charm to what is already a stellar single. Following on from 2020’s “Silver Cigarette Case”, “Push And Pull” is crafted around blistering guitar and a swingin’ groove, topped by Zac Hawkin’s swoon-worthy vocals, delicious harmonies and a teasing touch of Hammond-esque keys: a champion combination of elements that sees the band lay further claim to Aotearoa’s rock-and-roll territory.
Mini Simmons are seasoned performers with an infectious energy, having graced the stages of the likes of Rhythm and Vines, Splore, Sound Splash and Nest Fest along with headlining their own shows and tours across Australia and Aotearoa, and they’re heading out on tour across the country soon to celebrate the release of “Push And Pull”. You’ll be thanking your lucky stars you had the good sense to hook yourself up with a ticket!
